Introduction to the Solidification Process in Large Foundry Processing of Rolling Mill Frames

  When a large foundry pours liquid, it needs to wait for it to solidify to obtain the required casting. During the solidification of the casting, the cross-section has three zones: solid phase zone, solidification zone, and liquid phase zone. The width of the solidification zone is used to distinguish the solidification method.

  Intermediate solidification: many alloys solidify between layer-by-layer and mushy solidification; layer-by-layer solidification: certain elements in the metal do not have a solidification process or solidification zone during solidification. The two phases are clearly separated by a boundary. As the temperature decreases, the solid phase layer increases and the liquid phase continuously decreases; the temperature range for alloy crystallization is wide. In the solidification zone, the casting does not have a solid layer or solidification zone penetrating the entire cross-section, solidifying mushy first then solid.

  In handling the solidification method of rolling mill frames in large foundries, the following factors are summarized:

  1. Once the alloy crystallization temperature in the rolling mill frame casting reaches the specified value, the width of the solidification zone will also depend on the temperature gradient between the inner and outer layers of the casting. The smaller the temperature gradient, the wider the solidification zone.

  2. The scale of the alloy crystallization temperature: if the scale is small, a narrow solidification zone tends to solidify layer-by-layer. For example, in sand casting used by large foundries, low carbon steel solidifies layer-by-layer, while high carbon steel solidifies mushy. Casting repair agents have a high bonding strength with metal, can preserve color, and have good corrosion and aging resistance. The solidified material has high strength, no shrinkage, and can undergo various mechanical processing.
